About Us

Pet Physical Therapy

Pet physical therapy is an extremely important aspect of treatment in veterinary medicine to ensure the best care and greatest possible outcome, especially for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

Behind Our Name

In February 2009, our six-year-old pug Sierra Mist was diagnosed with an FCE, Fibro-Cartilaginous Emboli. With FCE a small amount of intervertebral disk material from between the bones of the spine (vertebrae) detaches spontaneously and lodges in a nearby blood vessel. This blocks the blood supply to a section of spinal cord and the associated nerves. The resulting inflammation and nerve damage leads to weakness, in coordination or, often sudden paralysis. Sierra’s right hind leg was acutely paralyzed and she was dragging her hind leg. Sierra was unable to move her right hind leg by herself and had difficulty maintaining her balance.

Support Friends of Sierra for those who can’t afford care.

Formally established in 2018, Friends of Sierra is a non-profit organization committed to continued education through research and development to improve the science of animal physical therapy. It is our hope that all dogs receive the care they need. We will assist in provision of physical therapy for organizations and families unable to pay for the service. We also hope to provide support of K-9 Officers as well as civilian K-9’s that are in need of physical therapy.

But we couldn’t have done any of this without the generosity and kindness of folks just like you. Your contribution to Friends of Sierra – no matter how small – makes a big difference for our heroes, their safety and the security of our community as well as our loving pets.
